Galvanized Wire Rope

When to choose a zinc-coated rope, how the coatings differ, and what is available.

What Galvanizing Does

Galvanized wire rope is standard steel rope whose wires carry a zinc coating. The zinc protects in two ways: it seals the steel from air and moisture, and where the coating is scratched it corrodes preferentially - sacrificing itself to protect the steel underneath.

The result is a rope that resists rust far better than bright rope in outdoor, damp and intermittently wet service, at a fraction of the cost of stainless steel.

It is the default finish for structural stays, guy lines, marine rigging and outdoor lifting that sees weather but not aggressive chlorides or chemicals.

Bright or Galvanized?

Service condition Recommended finish
Dry indoor service Bright
Outdoor, damp or intermittently wet Galvanized
Coastal, marine or wash-down areas Galvanized, kept lubricated - or stainless steel where chlorides are aggressive
High humidity, condensation or splash Galvanized

For coastal and chemical service where even galvanized rope would corrode, see the stainless steel wire rope guide.

Hot-Dip vs Electro-Galvanized

  • Hot-dip galvanized: the wire passes through molten zinc, giving a thicker, more durable coating - the usual choice for outdoor, marine and long-life service.
  • Electro-galvanized: zinc is deposited electrically, giving a thinner, smoother coating - common on small-diameter rope and where appearance matters more than coating life.

Both protect the same way; the difference is coating thickness and how long it lasts in weather. Tell us the environment and we will recommend the coating.

Our Galvanized Wire Rope

Greenlogy TEC supplies multi-strand bright or galvanized wire rope in diameters from 0.5 mm to 64 mm, with fiber core and steel core options and fittings including thimble eyes, swaged terminals and wedge sockets.

Galvanized constructions in the range: 1x19, 7x19, 6x19 IWRC and 6x36 IWRC.

Not sure which construction and finish to pair? The construction guide explains how the strand patterns behave, and the breaking strength guide lists the working capacities.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is galvanized wire rope?

Standard steel wire rope whose wires carry a zinc coating. The zinc seals the steel from moisture and corrodes preferentially at scratches, so the rope resists rust far better than bright rope in outdoor and damp service.

Hot-dip or electro-galvanized - what is the difference?

Hot-dip galvanizing gives a thicker, more durable zinc layer and is the usual choice for outdoor, marine and long-life service. Electro-galvanizing gives a thinner, smoother coating, common on small diameters and where appearance matters more than coating thickness.

Is galvanized wire rope better than stainless steel?

They answer different budgets and conditions. Galvanized rope costs less and handles ordinary outdoor and damp service well. Stainless steel rope resists chlorides and chemicals far better, so it is the choice for coastal, marine and wash-down areas with aggressive corrosion.

Can any construction be supplied galvanized?

Our standard range is supplied bright or galvanized in diameters from 0.5 mm to 64 mm, including 1x19, 7x19, 6x19 and 6x36 constructions. Tell us the construction and diameter and we will confirm the finish.

Does galvanizing affect the breaking strength?

The zinc layer is thin compared with the wire, so breaking strength is set by the construction, diameter and wire grade rather than by the finish. The published value for the product applies as supplied.
