5/8 Inch Wire Rope Breaking Strength and SWL
A 5/8" wire rope is 15.9 mm nominal. At that size our minimum breaking load runs from 161 kN to 263 kN depending on construction and grade - 6x36 IWRC 1770 MPa at 161 kN, against 1x19 1960 MPa at 263 kN. At a 5:1 safety factor the working load is 32.2 kN to 52.6 kN.
Breaking strength of a 5/8" wire rope by construction
Each row is a construction we stock at this size, with the stock diameter matching the inch size and the minimum breaking load published on that product table. Where a construction is made in both grades, both are given.
| Construction | Stock diameter | Minimum breaking load (kN / kg) | Weight (kg/m / lb/ft) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6x36 IWRC | 16 mm | 1770 MPa: 161 kN / 16,453 kg 1960 MPa: 179 kN / 18,219 kg | 1.05 / 0.71 |
| 6x19 IWRC | 16 mm | 1770 MPa: 161 kN / 16,453 kg 1960 MPa: 179 kN / 18,219 kg | 1.02 / 0.69 |
| 1x19 | 16 mm | 1770 MPa: 238 kN / 24,250 kg 1960 MPa: 263 kN / 26,853 kg | 1.27 / 0.85 |
MBL is the minimum breaking load - the load at which the rope is required to break. It is never a working load. The kg figure is the product table’s own kilogram column (1 kN = 101.97 kg).
Working load at 5:1, 6:1 and 8:1
Working load is the breaking load divided by a safety factor. The factor comes from the application and the standard that governs it - lifting gear is treated differently from a static guy. The columns below are arithmetic on the published MBL, not a recommendation for any particular duty.
| Construction | Stock diameter | Grade | MBL (kN) | 5:1 working load (kN) | 6:1 working load (kN) | 8:1 working load (kN) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6x36 IWRC | 16 mm | 1770 MPa | 161 | 32.2 | 26.8 | 20.1 |
| 6x36 IWRC | 16 mm | 1960 MPa | 179 | 35.8 | 29.8 | 22.4 |
| 6x19 IWRC | 16 mm | 1770 MPa | 161 | 32.2 | 26.8 | 20.1 |
| 6x19 IWRC | 16 mm | 1960 MPa | 179 | 35.8 | 29.8 | 22.4 |
| 1x19 | 16 mm | 1770 MPa | 238 | 47.6 | 39.7 | 29.8 |
| 1x19 | 16 mm | 1960 MPa | 263 | 52.6 | 43.8 | 32.9 |
Conversion: 1 kN = 101.97 kg = 0.102 tonnes. The highest breaking load in the table above, divided by 5, is the figure in the first column of this one.
5/8" on the order
0.625 in is 15.875 mm; stock is 16 mm. At this diameter 6x36 and 6x19 publish the same 161 kN at 1770 MPa and differ only in weight - 1.05 against 1.02 kg/m - because both are built from the same wire at the same 16 mm. The 1x19 jumps to 238 kN. 7x19 stops at 14 mm and is not made this large.
The inch size is nominal and the stock diameter is what ships, so both belong on the enquiry - “5/8" (16 mm) 6x36 IWRC, 1770 MPa” - together with the length, the end fittings and the duty. That lets the quotation answer the installation rather than the size alone.
