Stainless Steel Wire Rope

Marine grade corrosion resistance for coastal, marine and chemical service.

Why Stainless

Stainless steel rope is made from corrosion-resistant steel wire rather than carbon steel with a coating.

There is no zinc layer to wear through, so the rope keeps its surface in wet, salty and chemical environments where galvanized rope would eventually corrode - see the galvanized wire rope guide for the comparison.

Stainless is not immune to corrosion: chlorides, acids and crevices can still attack it, which is why grade selection matters. Match the grade to the environment, and stainless rope delivers long, low-maintenance service with a clean appearance that suits visible installations.

304 vs 316

Two stainless grades cover most wire rope service:

  • Type 304 - the general-purpose stainless, good for outdoor, freshwater and architectural exposure.
  • Type 316 - adds molybdenum, which improves resistance to chlorides; the usual choice for marine, coastal and chemical service.

Our stainless range is supplied as marine grade. Tell us the environment - especially the chloride and chemical exposure - and we will confirm the grade and construction for your order.

Where It Is Used

  • Yacht and boat rigging, guardrails and balustrade cables.
  • Marine, coastal and offshore structures that see salt air and spray.
  • Food, beverage and pharmaceutical areas where clean, washable surfaces matter.
  • Chemical plants and pool areas where chlorides attack ordinary steel.
  • Visible architectural cables that must stay bright and rust-free.

Our Marine Grade Ropes

Construction Diameters Grade Published breaking strength
1x19 4 to 12 mm 1570 95.8 kN at 10 mm
6x36 IWRC 8 to 32 mm 1570 224 kN at 20 mm; 572 kN at 32 mm
7x7 1 to 14 mm 1570 59.3 kN at 10 mm; 117 kN at 14 mm

The 1x19 construction gives low stretch for stays and guardrails; 6x36 IWRC is flexible for lifting and marine duty; 7x7 covers small diameters down to 1 mm. Fittings are available: thimble eyes, swaged terminals and wedge sockets.

For how the constructions behave, see the construction guide; for working capacities, the breaking strength guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does marine grade stainless steel wire rope mean?

A stainless rope built for wet, salty environments: it resists the rust and staining that shorten the life of carbon steel rope outdoors. It is used for rigging, guardrails, yacht fittings, coastal structures, and food and pharmaceutical areas.

304 or 316 stainless - which do I need?

Type 304 suits outdoor, freshwater and architectural exposure. Type 316 adds molybdenum for better chloride resistance and is the usual choice for marine, coastal and chemical service. Tell us the environment and we will confirm the grade.

Is stainless steel wire rope stronger than galvanized?

Not necessarily. Our marine grade ropes are rated at 1570 MPa, while carbon steel ropes come in 1770 and 1960 MPa grades, so a carbon steel rope of the same diameter usually shows a higher breaking strength. Stainless wins on corrosion, not on strength.

Does stainless steel wire rope rust?

It resists rust far better than carbon steel, but it is not immune: chlorides, acids and low-oxygen crevices can still attack it over time. Grade selection and the service environment decide how well it holds up.

Do you supply fittings for stainless wire rope?

Yes. Thimble eyes, swaged terminals and wedge sockets are available to finish the assembly. Tell us the construction and diameter and we will quote the matching fittings.
